Indiana U. Press Releases Titles on the Web

Scholars, researchers, and students are now just clicks away from some of the most popular titles released by the Indiana University Press.
With the launch of IU Press Online, anyone with an Internet connection can read sections of books and themed journals for free and purchase full-text versions at a discounted price.
“It speaks to our mission to disseminate scholarship as widely as we can,” said Kathryn Caras, director of electronic and serials publishing.
The online portal is in its infancy, but it already offers more than 200 books and 75 themed journals from five subject areas: African studies; African-American and diaspora studies; Jewish and Holocaust studies; philosophy; and Russian, East European and Eurasian studies. The press plans to add books about music and religious studies over the summer. Ms. Caras said all the press’s titles will eventually show up on the site.
The press has made most books’ tables of contents free, along with their first chapters or introductions, Ms. Caras said. Users can purchase the full text of individual articles or subscribe to individual collections, groups of collections, or the entire library.
The material can also be accessed with handheld mobile devices like the iPhone. And users can bookmark, cite, or share documents on sites like Delicious and Digg, or subscribe to an RSS feed that gives updates when content is added.

I-Blog and Innovate

I-Blog is one of two social networks in Innovate, the journal of online education. The other is Innovate-Ideagora. Each complements the other via two of the most dynamic Web 2.0 media: blogs and forums. Innovate-Ideagora engages subscribers and the public at large via open discussion threads. Anyone who subscribes to Innovate-Ideagora is allowed to begin new threads and reply to posts. As in most forums, posts are brief and informal, and closer to actual conversations than articles. Innovate-Ideagora also provides blogging services for members, but these are personal blogs with purposes determined by the individual.
I-Blog differs from Innovate-Ideagora in fundamental ways: posts are longer and closer to articles than conversations, and only staff and guest authors are allowed to submit articles. Additionally, it adopts the “blog forum” approach, described above, to assure readers of a steady stream of thoughtful and thought-provoking articles.
Finally, I-Blog, like Innovate-Ideagora, is interactive. Attached to each article is a comment feature that allows for discussion between readers and writers. Our authors will respond to reader comments, ensuring a dynamic dialogue around each post.
Both social networks complement Innovate. Editors and administrators publish columns in each issue, summarizing the activities in their respective networks. Additionally, they invite selected authors to submit articles or participate in interviews.

I’m a high school teacher. Like all high schools, we are dealing with a problem that sucks time, energy, and resources like a black hole: cellphones. We waged a similar battle a few years back with iPods, and although stakes seem much higher now, the fundamental argument is the same. The argument is:
1] cellphones are a distraction2] cellphones present a potential liability in terms of cheating on tests3] cellphones are a distraction…So I’m asking for some insight on how to sell this to an administration that is overwhelmed with a hundred more important things, and to a school board that feels that two $500 computers are twice as good as one $1,000 machine. What’s the answer?
I’m so fed up with these arguments. Paper clips are a distraction. Spiral notebooks are a distraction. And as we’ve seen recently, students certainly do NOT need a cell phone to cheat on an exam.
So off the top of my head, I decided to rattle off a few things that cell phones could be good for.
Such as…1) Check the spelling/definition of a word2) Research a topic3) Look up reference images4) Pull up maps (even with satellite imagery)5) Document a science lab with built in digital camera/video6) Fact check on the fly7) Mail questions to the teacher that they might be embarrassed to ask Classroom response system9) Take quizzes10) Record and/or listen to podcasts

When the Whypox -- a plague that causes the afflicted to break out in red spots -- hit, residents had to go to the Center for Disease Control to learn about the epidemic. When the WhyFlu went around, those who got vaccinated were protected. But as new viruses escape from a biotechnology project, residents must scramble to develop new vaccines.
Then there was the deadly red tide, which prompted locals to take water samples to the Oceanographic Institution in an attempt to find solutions. And when Hurricane Alice landed, residents took a crash course on the impact of global climate change.

Now the university has gone a step further, posting more than 200 course videos on a new, slick-looking YouTube channel. Among the lectures already airing on the channel are discourses on human anatomy, electrical engineering, and an “introduction to the science of nonviolence.”

The site seems to be a hit. More than 2,000 YouTube users have already “subscribed” to the Berkeley channel, and that number is certain to rise considerably in the coming days. For colleges that have joined iTunes U. or started separate podcasting projects, there’s a lesson to be had here: If you’re really serious about using the Web to disseminate lectures, it pays to try as many different distribution methods as possible. —Brock Read

So just what is RSS and how can it be used in education? Depending on who you talk to, RSS stands for Rich Site Summary or Real Simple Syndication. Either way, RSS is a real important technology that information specialists and educators would be well advised to harness sooner rather than later. In simple terms, Weblogs (and an ever-growing number of other sites) generate a behind-the-scenes code in a language similar to HTML called XML. (more).
